How can I advertise my tutoring services?
The most powerful advertising is word of mouth and personal
recommendations from existing clients. If you have no existing clients,
there are several avenues you may choose to let people know you are
available.
- Internet advertising: This is a surprisingly
inexpensive option, and there’s a lot of potential for payoff. Both
Yahoo! (via Overture) and Google (via Adwords) offer
accounts where you can select keywords that when searched will show
your ad. The great thing about these services is that they are CPC
(cost per click) based which means that you only pay for people that
actually click on your ad. You can bid as little as 5 cents per click
which can make this a potentially effective method in aquiring new
clients.
- Website: A professional-looking tutoring website
can help aquire new clients and help reinforce confidence in your
services. Websites do not need to be expensive endeavors and at a
minimum should contain information about your services, prices,
availability and experience. Here are some samples of great
independent tutoring websites: San Diego
Tutor, St. Louis Tutor, Chicago Tutor, Tucson

- Brick and mortar community postings: Grocery
stores, churches, libraries and other community gathering places often
have bulletin boards and other forums for advertising your
services.
- Online community postings: A great example of
this is craigslist, a free online community website. There
may be other websites targeting your area as well.
- Direct advertising: This is the most expensive
and/or time consuming option. Passing out or mailing fliers or placing
ads in local print and radio media are most likely available in your
area, if you have the cash.
