A good tutor can adapt to the learning goals of nearly any student. For students who are struggling in traditional classrooms, tutoring can be an excellent way to build self-esteem and a desire to learn. Of course, in addition to these benefits, their tutor should be providing academic support and practice in the areas where the student most needs it. So, skills improve along with the student’s attitude.
On the other hand, tutors can be a great way to challenge students who are not being challenged in their traditional classrooms. The great thing about tutors is that they can have the flexibility to incorporate a student’s personal interests into their extra work. In addition, tutors trying to challenge a successful student should make use of unique materials and situations in order to expand their student’s experience and learning.
In both cases, however, student buy-in is a vitally important element to success. If the student is uncomfortable and uninterested, the tutoring sessions will be far less effective. In the case of the struggling student, expect the tutor to be able to foster enthusiasm by giving their student opportunities to succeed. In the case of the student in need of challenge, capitalizing on personal interests is a great way to get them to want to do extra work.
